i cant sync my new iphone 7 to itunes, sync not highlighted

i just got a new iphone 7 and when i try to sync it to my itunes (old version, old computer) the sync tab is grey not black,so it wont let me. i ran diagnostics and still cannot sync. please tell me what i can do
