Issues with iTunes for Windows (update)

I recently tried to recover a backup of my iPhone 5s to iPhone SE. The SE wouldn't recognize the iTunes I had installed on my Windows 8 pc and returned a message that I needed to update iTunes, which I did to 12.7.2.60. After the update, iTunes wouldn't load any more and I got the error message:

"The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close the application."

I meticulously followed the instructions of member turingtest2 (to whom many thanks are in order for posting very detailed troubleshooting instructions on the issue) contained here:

Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates

Nevertheless, after having completely uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes (including all components, as per turingtest2's instructions), which I tried with versions 12.7.2.60 and 12.6.3.6, I am still getting the same error message and cannot start iTunes.

An additional problem is that I can no longer know which iTunes version I had before, which was working fine with my pc (with Avast Internet Security antivirus installed) and the 5s (on iOS 11). All I know is I had installed it almost exactly two years ago.

Can anyone help?

Is there any other way to get the SE to communicate with the 5s?

Thanks,

iPhone 5s, iOS 11.0.3

If iTunes is apparently installed correctly try the following in turn until iTunes opens/closes/reopens normally:

  • Remove any SD card that might be in a card reader.
  • Exit the BTTray.exe Bluetooth utility if installed.
  • Locate the shortcut for iTunes, right-click on it, and select Run as administrator. Doing this once may fix certain launch issues. Some users were finding that with the 12.6.1.25 build, for example, they had to use this method every time and modified the shortcut accordingly.
  • Try holding ctrl+shift as you launch iTunes so it opens in safe-mode. Again doing this once may sometimes help.
  • Try disconnecting your computer from the Internet before running iTunes.
  • Delete the iTunes shortcuts from the start menu, desktop, task bar, or similar, then repair iTunes from the programs and features control panel.
  • Try Fix unexpected quits or launch issues in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support and test the behaviour in a different user profile or with a different library. If the problem only exists in your profile it may be possible to delete some of the iTunes preference files which it would seem that iTunes may be choking on. We can go into details later if the issue is limited to your own profile.
  • Temporarily disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus and see if that has any impact on the behaviour.
  • See the second box in Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for detailed tear down and rebuild advice. Disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus software when reinstalling and run the installer as the administrator.
  • Or see the iTunes installers section of the troubleshooting tip and reinstall the last version that worked correctly for you. Note that iTunes 12.6.3.6 is the minimum version required for devices running iOS 11.

I thank you for your kind answer, I am trying to go through the various checks you propose. Meanwhile, to give some more details on the problem:

I did a system restore to go back to the iTunes release that had been functioning on my computer and I was able to see that the first release I had installed was iTunes 12.3.2.35, in the beginning of 2016. However, after completion of system restore, the PC was left with the 12.6.3.6 release (the last I had tried to reinstall), which still refuses to load.

Please note that, even after upgrading to iOS 11, iTunes never showed any signs of difficulty to connect to the iPhone 5s. I don't understand why it should then have any connectivity problems with a new and unused SE, which for all I know might still be on iOS 10 (I've only managed to activate it thus far).

The other thing I tried was a humongous Windows 8 security update (I was way behind on that), thinking that some drivers might be affected. So far, the update has not been entirely successful. If you have any further tips on that, let me know.

The only reason I installed iTunes in the first place was to manage the iPhone (the only Apple device I had), and I never consciously updated it, so I doubt my profile would be the cause.

Will keep you posted. Thanks in advance,

Hello tt2

Happy holidays. I am running the Itunes using my own windows Id which has admin privileges and I use the latest version of FireFox (not IE). Prior to upgrading Itunes and the IOS to the latest versions, I was able to drag and drop PDFs from my laptop running Windows 10 to Itunes. In fact, it was so great that adding or removing PDF files was taking place real time, needless to run the "Sync". Now, when I drag the PDF into the device on the Itune's screen, it doesn't transfer. I am wondering if the new release of Itunes introduced an inadvertent bug?
