Issues with iTunes for Windows (update)

I recently tried to recover a backup of my iPhone 5s to iPhone SE. The SE wouldn't recognize the iTunes I had installed on my Windows 8 pc and returned a message that I needed to update iTunes, which I did to 12.7.2.60. After the update, iTunes wouldn't load any more and I got the error message:

"The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close the application."

I meticulously followed the instructions of member turingtest2 (to whom many thanks are in order for posting very detailed troubleshooting instructions on the issue) contained here:

Nevertheless, after having completely uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes (including all components, as per turingtest2's instructions), which I tried with versions 12.7.2.60 and 12.6.3.6, I am still getting the same error message and cannot start iTunes.

An additional problem is that I can no longer know which iTunes version I had before, which was working fine with my pc (with Avast Internet Security antivirus installed) and the 5s (on iOS 11). All I know is I had installed it almost exactly two years ago.

Can anyone help?

Is there any other way to get the SE to communicate with the 5s?

Thanks,

iPhone 5s, iOS 11.0.3
