Video camera not showing up on import anymore?

Good morning. As the title states, I have an old video camera (Sony DCR-PC100) that uses MiniDV. I'm trying to convert all of our MiniDV's to digital. Did some research to find out I need an i.Link cable for the Sony camcorder, to Firewire, and I have a newer MacBook so I got a Firewire to Thunderbolt converter. The other night I downloaded iMovie, plugged in the camcorder, and it was able to recognize and pull the video no problem. Now this morning I am trying again and I can't seem to find the camera to import. I'm doing everything the same, I just can't see the camera anymore to import. Thanks for any help.

Hi, Mike,

iMovie supports most mini DV tape-based cameras. Although your Sony DCR-PC 100 isn't specifically listed on Apple's website it still might be supported, as your successful first try indicates.

Since iMovie did recognize your camera the first time you tried it, possibly a preference got corrupted that is preventing it from recognizing it on subsequent tries. Try opening iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys, and deleting preferences in the box that appears. See if that solves it.

If still no luck, try importing your video into into your Photos app, and from there you can access it in iMovie from the Photos library item in the media screen sidebar. Another thing you can try is to import your video directly onto your desktop using the Image Capture app on your Mac, and from there you can drag the video into iMovie.
