iCloud Documents / folders and files on Mac High Sierra

Tried to move folder from my Mac to iCloud Documents. Folder was copied to iDrive and I could open Mac Numbers files using Documents folder. The Mac folder was MOVED to iCloud Documents and DELETED from my Mac. The iDrive was to be used with a MacBook Air. Anyone able to use iCloud Documents and maintain the folder / files on your Mac ?

Which version of MacOS X are you using? There is a difference between iCloud Drive on the earlier versions Yosemite, El Capitan, and the newer versions Sierra and High Sierra. On Sierra and High High Sierra you have the "Optimize Storage" option.

If you do not enable "Optimize Storage" in the System Preferences > iCloud > iCloud Drive, all files on iCloud Drive will be mirrored on your Mac, so Time Machine can back them up and you can access them using the Finder. You can see iCloud Drive in the Finder Sidebar, if you enable it in the Finder Preferences to show in the sidebar. This is the way how iCloud Drive is handled on Yosemite and El Capitan.
If you enable "Optimize Storage" however, you will only see a link to the optimized iCloud documents, with a cloud symbol to the right. Then you need to wait for the items to download from iCloud, if you want to use them.
