I just upgraded to ios11 on my iPad and did not watch they keynote this time to learn about it. I use to be able to just press my home button and it would take me back to the homepage of my iPad. Now I have to double click and tap on a blank space to get there. Is there a way to change this at all? I have searched around in the settings to no avail. This is quite possibly the dumbest change I have ever seen.

That is not normal. It is still one tap of the home button to return to the home screen. Try a reset by holding the power button and the home button until you see the Apple logo then let go. If that does not help, then restore it through iTunes on your computer.
