Copying HEVC Video in Files App - odd behaviour...

I’m reasonably new a this and have been working with LumaFusion to move some content around within the Files App and to/from the Camera Roll.

What works:

-Moving H.264 video from the camera roll to any location in the Files App.

What I can’t seem to do:

-I can’t move video clips FROM the files app to the camera roll

-I can’t move H.265 video clips From the camera roll to anywhere in the files app, without the files app converting to H.264. why?

-I can’t AirDrop H.265 video clips from my iPad to my Mac (High Sierra) without having them converted (and to a much lower Bitrate) to H.264.

-I can’t Share H.265 video clips from anywhere to Apps that actually will Play them via the Share Sheet (Xfer via iTunes works file) - Apps like VLC, Infuse etc.

It’s as tho the H.265 implementation in iOS has been tied to a chair, bound, and had duct tape wrapped around it’s head.

What gives?

Good Morning WestVanPete,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand you have some questions regarding working with the new HEVC format. Have you updated your iPad to the latest version of iOS 11? The resource below will explain how the new format works and how to change some settings on your device to make adjustments to working in High Efficiency or Most Compatible formats.
Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices
Take care.

Thank you for the reply-

Yes, I'm on iOS 11. That's what gives me the ability to create the H.265 video I think... (LumaFusion only supports formats native to iOS)

And I've gone thru Apple's support doc in detail, it does explain why AirDrop exhibits this behaviour, although it doesn't make sense to me because I want to move the H.265 video to my Mac (which also supports H.265 since High Sierra).

None of my other questions are answered tho - the weirdest one being "Copying the File in Files App changes the format"

What kind of File Manager monkeys with the format during a File Copy Operation?

I've reported it to Apple as a bug because it's either a bug or it's a stupid decision.

Ha... yeah, I no longer do that. They're great at helping you get your email set up and configuring iCloud syncing on Notes, but not so good if you have a technical question which is likely a bug or unintentional behaviour in their software.

If you haven't tried - the first thing they do is have you reset your settings on your iOS device. Then for a minute they suggest you restore the device from factory settings. Once you talk them out of that they make you hold for 20 minutes for a senior advisor, who is very compassionate, and promises to help you have your issue resolved. Then the senior adviser, who understands your problem, realizes they don't know anything about the app and they transfer you (after another hold) to an iOS App specialist (in this case Files) who will listen to you and say - after checking notes and probably trying it out himself - that this behaviour is completely intentional. At that point you're arguing with a guy who says "We meant to do that" about whether the iPad 'should' be doing that.

It's a complete waste of time.

I prefer to waste much less time by leaving Apple feedback. I know they ignore it, but it only takes 60 seconds rather than three hours.

Same waste, less time.
