Image Capture stalls after scan

Immediately after completion of a Scan, there is a second flash of light from the scanner glass, the iMac screen blinks, and the mouse freezes on the Scan button. The keyboard and mouse are nonresponsive.

I power-cycled the scanner, but the iMac remained stalled.

I booted the iMac in Safe Mode, then shut down. I started the iMac in Normal Mode opting for resumption of the apps which were open prior to the hard shut down.

Image Capture opens with the following error report:

An error occurred while communicating with the scanner. (-9923)

Continuing the original post, here is a work-around.

1. Mouse-click on the Image Capture title bar to set focus of attention within the Image Capture window.

2. After clicking on the Scan button, immediately move the mouse outside of the Scan button.

Before installation of macOS High Sierra, Version 10.13.2, a click on Image Capture's Scan button did not disable

the mouse and keyboard.

I installed the following two downloads: epson18533.dmg, epson19400.dmg

Drivers and Utilities Combo Package 12/06/17 147 MB epson18533.dmg

Firmware version CB22HB 12/01/17 22.8 MB epson19400.dmg

Device Name: EPSON_WF_3650 Series

Image Capture continues to stall the iMac. It succeeds if I am scanning a small custom area, but fails consistently if scanning most of an 8.5 x 11 inch page.
