Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

"What's new in Photos" being displayed on each launch

Each time I open Photos.app I get the launch screen "What's new in Photos".

I have a 265Gb Photos library sitting on an external Thunderbolt connected Lacie drive formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled), with "Ignore ownership on this volume" ticked and with the correct permissions and ownership.

Permissions have also been confirmed as per:

Resolve issues caused by changing the permissions of items in your home folder - Apple Support

I have tried all the suggestions on these forums including removing:

~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Photos

The com.apple.Photos.plist was also removed on subsequent attempts at closing and re-opening Photos.app with no change in behaviour:

rm ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Photos/Data/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Photos .plist

When I remove the directory: ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Photos and restart Photos.app I get the splash screen and looking at the preferences in the app I see "Use as System Library" is greyed out meaning it is selected as the System Library. If I close and reopen I get the splash screen again but this time "Use as System Library" is not greyed out meaning the selection has not 'stuck'.

If I convert the binary plist (~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Photos/Data/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Photos.pl ist) to xml I can see the following has been set:

<key>IPXWhatsNewSerialNumber</key>

<integer>1</integer>

I assume this means it should not be showing me the splash screen again. I couldn't see anything in the plist about the System Library setting however.

This was working fine before High Sierra.

Software versions:

OSX - High Sierra 10.13.2

Photos - Version 3.0 (3251.12.190)

Open the library an go to Photo's General preference pane. There click on the button which says Use as System Photo Library. (If it's greyed out then the library is already the System Photo Library).

That should kill the New in Photos tour.

Some tests to determine how widespread the problem is:

1 - to determine if it's the library that's not behaving correctly launch Photos with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists, i.e. try to set it as the System library. Close that library and reopen it to see if stuck. Then reopen your original library and try setting it as the system library.

NOTE: do not try this if you have activated the iCloud Photo Library as this will trigger a complete upload of your library to iCloud.

2 - log into another user account, create a new library there and test to see if it works there. This will tell us if the problem is limited to your user account or is system wide.

3 - to see if there's some 3rd party software that's interfering with the library's performance boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and try your original library from there.

Also download and run Etrecheck. Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Ok.....

Creating a new Photos library under the same user results in the same behaviour.

Creating a new user and opening Photos shows the spash screen as expected but on the second open it is all as it should be.

Now here is the interesting part. Going back to the first user and opening Photos again, it didn't show the splash screen and the Photos library was the System Library but on the next open it had reverted to showing the splash screen and the System Library de-selected.

I can't do the safe-mode check because I am off site and troubleshooting remotely but will do the next time I am at my parents.

I found these two Apple pages:

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/photos/back-up-the-photos-library-pht6d60d 10f

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/photos/system-photo-library-overview-pht21 1de786

The important part of this is:

WARNING: If a Photos library is located on an external drive, don’t use Time Machine to store a backup on that external drive. The permissions for your Photos library may conflict with those for the Time Machine backup.

I was using Time Machine to back up the external drive.. because... well... thats what we use on OSX....

This is pretty lame.... Apples recommendation for Photos backup for users with internal SSD's who can't fit their 256Gb Photos library on the internal drive:

Manually copy your library to an external storage device: Drag the Photos library (by default in the Pictures folder on your Mac) to your storage device to create a copy.

I have manually set ownership on the external mount and manually removed all extended attributes put there by Tiem Machine:

xattr -c -r /Volumes/PHOTOS_01/Photos_Library_2016_1.photoslibrary

I am now running a Photos library repair and I can see new extended attributes being applied (Time Machine probably wiped these out).

Will report back with results.

In the German Apple Support Communities I found this recommendation by Apple Support:

https://communities.apple.com/de/thread/200019238?answerId=200073808622#200073808622

On the external drive the Photos Library needs to be at the top-level of the drive and not in a subfolder. Then Photos will remember it. But Apple Support could not explain why this matters.

The only problem I see in the Etrecheck report is that you've installed Clean My Mac 3 which is considered akin to malware around here. Uninstall it according to the developer's instructions: How to uninstall CleanMyMac 3. Knowledge Base - MacPaw.

Another test you can run is to go into your Users/Home/Library/Containers folder and move the com.apple.Photos folder to the Desktop. Reboot and test Photos again. If no better you can replace the new folder with the one from the Desktop if desired.

Creating a new user and opening Photos shows the spash screen as expected but on the second open it is all as it should be.

That tells me that the problem is limited to your user account. You have something installed for that account that is interfering with Photos operation. Now you'll need to determine what it is.

Running in Safe Mode when you get home should confirm that.

Yeah - I knew about CleanMyMac but to be honest I doubt it’s related. Worked fine before High Sierra and also works fine in a different account on the same machine.

CleanMyMac is interfering with Photos in two ways. It is removing the cached data which will allow photos to remember the state of the background processes, and it is removing the working copies of the edited versions in your photos library and replacing the original image files by the working copies (and frequently doing it incorrectly), if you allow CleanMyMac to touch your Photos library. You will sooner or later see lots of broken references where Photos can no longer access the originals of the photos, and you will have lost the ability to revert edited photos to the original. Photos Library repair cannot fix this.

You may have installed incompatible software causing this, or there is a permissions problem with your home folder.
