What is the best external hard drive for an iMac, late 2013 model, 1TB?

My current backup hard drive (Lacie d2 Quadra, 1TB) appears to have died (four days of Apple tech support troubleshooting efforts have concluded). What is the best external hard drive for an iMac. I need one with MacOS Extended (Journaled) format and would like something in the $100 range, if possible. I just need 1 TB. I see lots of listings for the orange Lacie portable drives but they appear to be for people needing mobile hard drives. Mine would be stationary on my desk.

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

Many us here prefer the OWC Mercury Elite Pro series drives.

When you get the new drive it's best to reformat it to remove any pre-installed software, no matter who the vendor is.
