Mail not synching

I have an iPhone 7, MacBook, and Mac, and I use Gmail for my primary mail account. Inbox mail changes sync between the iPhone and Mac but not with (initiated or received) on the MacBook. How can the MacBook be made to sync email actions?

MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015), macOS High Sierra (10.13.2)

Make sure gmail is set up as an IMAP account. Make sure the email client on all devices is set up to connect to gmail using IMAP.
