Update and slow speed woes

My iPad Air had suddenly started running slowly. WiFi signal shows poor from Speedtest App., but WiFi shows Excellent from laptop and gateway tests. I tried a couple of Power/home button resets and a network reset from general settings ,but it failed to remedy. I thought that maybe installing the latest update so I could do a backup was in order. After spending 30 minutes downloading, it popped up with an estimate of 9 hours to complete. Then it failed an hour into it with a software error.

To complicate things, last night when I attempted to get iTunes updated on my laptop it yielded a signature error. So I attempted to do a download from the iTunes site. It estimated a 1 3/4 hour download time, but an hour into it, after progressing maybe 20% failed. I tried a couple more times but finally gave up. In the past Ive disabled security on my laptop to work around this problem, but is that really safe? This isn’t some kind of obscure shareware and updates should be a breeze to do !!!

If I have to take my iPad to the Apple Store I will cry. Its Christmas time and nearest one is a minimum hour drive away. It’s located in an upscale mall that is difficult to access and is over crowded even in the best of times.

Good morning mmc2elgin,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand you are having issues connecting to the internet with your iPad Air and with your Windows PC. I don't blame you for not wanting to deal with the holiday traffic, so let's see what we can do with your existing setup. Try the steps below to refresh the internet connection, improve your connection speed with an ethernet cable, and update your iPad using iTunes for Windows.
1. Recycle the Power to your Modem/Router:
a) Shut down the computer and turn off your iPad Air.
b) If you have a combination router/modem, unplug the power cord on the device.
If you have two devices, unplug the router first (it is the device with an antenna), then unplug the modem.
c) Wait a minute or two, then plug the modem in first, then the router. Wait for all of the status lights to indicate
the device(s) are connected to the internet.
d) Start your computer and turn on your devices.

2. On your Windows PC, if you are currently only working with Wi-Fi, connect your computer to your router or
modem/router combo using an ethernet cable, which provides the fastest internet connection.
3. Disable your security software at least long enough to download and install iTunes for Windows.
4. Make sure you have a recent backup of your iPad Air
5. Attach the iPad Air to your computer and update the iOS software using iTunes for Windows with your wired
(ethernet) connection.
6. Once the iPad is updated, disconnect it from your computer and try surfing again using Wi-Fi.
I'll include some resources below which will provide additional information.
