where do i find os x el capitan to update my early 2009 iMac (which won't allow me to upgrade to os x sierra)?

i need to update the os x on my early 2009 iMac. Since my mac is unable to accept the os x sierra software update, where can i obtain the os x software / installer for El Capitan?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

You can download El Capitan from the App Store: How to get macOS Sierra - Apple Support. This explains the process.
