Why doesn't my disk utility recognize my blank cd?

Why doesn't my macbook pro disc utility recognize my blank cd? The machine sends me to disc utility but none of the actions are available. I want to copy my itunes album on cd to play on my stereo or in my car.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Hi, Carlwein!

Thanks for stopping by the Apple Support Communities. If I'm understanding your post, you would like to burn a CD of music you have in iTunes so you can listen to it in a stereo, or in the car. CDs provide a great opportunity for on-the-go music, and I'd be happy to help you create some!

First, make sure you're going through the burn process exactly. The following article will walk you through it, step-by-step: iTunes for Mac: Create your own CDs and DVDs .

If you are indeed going through that process and are still running into trouble with your CD, see if the steps here help: iTunes for Mac: If you have trouble burning a disc .

Should neither of these articles address your issue, don't hesitate to reply back. If you do, please provide additional information on what is happening, with as much concise detail as possible. This would include information such as:
  1. The specific steps you are taking to begin the burn process
  2. The point at which you run into issues
  3. Whether you receive any error messages, and what those error messages are
  4. Any steps you take as a result of the error
For example, you stated the computer refers you to Disk Utility, but none of the actions are available. What is the exact message you receive suggesting you use Disk Utility, and how are the options unavailable (for example, are all the options greyed out so you cannot click on them)?

Cheers!
