Rocket image in center of home screen. What is it and how do I get rid of it?

Since we can't see your computer, a screen shot would be helpful so we know what this rocket looks like.
Press Command+Shift+3. A file named "Screen Shot xxx" should appear on your desktop. Start a reply in this topic, then drag and drop the image into the window where you would type your response.
My guess is it's the icon for Launchpad.
