Macbook Pro crashes halfway through booting up

The Mac Sierra partition of my son's approximately 2016 MacBook Pro hangs up halfway through startup. He doesn't have a recent backup. How can we try to diagnose and repair the problem? Or failing that, retrieve the data. It does still boot up into Windows. Thanks.
