I was cleaning out my Macbook air and I came across a file called InstallESD.dmg and it is taking up 4.4GB. Is it safe to delete?

Judging by the size, it could be an entire Mac OS installer, possibly an older one since the newer versions are all well above 5 GB. You might have downloaded it at some point, but not installed it? FWIW, is it in your Applications folder?
It's not something on my Mac and I know it is part of an OS installer. It may be a leftover from a previous installation.
I doubt it is needed, but for clarity, can you please give us the full path to the file.
Generally, yes. Not sure why it is sitting alone on your Mac. Did you create a bootable installer using an archaic procedure sometime in the past?

Not too sure what a bootable installer is but I don't think I've created one. I found it in the macOS Install Data folder.
It says its a disk image (not sure if that means anything). It is in the macOS Install Data folder, not applications.
Exactly where is this folder located? I can't check because I do not seem to have one.
Move the file to the Trash, restart the computer, and if everything is working normally, empty the Trash.
With the file selected, to see the path, go Finder/View/Show Path Bar.
Can i delete the InstallESD.dmg file?
