I was given an iPhone 4s and can't update it. I get the following messages when I try.

Serial #: C8***TF9

iPhone Recovery Mode

iTunes is preparing to restore the software on the iPhone.

Then I get:

The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (48).

Any thoughts please?

Hello there,

I recommend trying DFU mode, this restores the device firmware when the software is corrupt. To get into DFU mode it's a but timely but watch this video for instructions on how to get their. In DFU mode the screen will be black (don't panic) and just click Restore. Always does the trick.
