Lightening cable stopped working after update

Last update prior to the one 12-13-17, I had the iPad mini plugged into my cable, that I always use, clicked on update. During the night it ran, in the am it was no longer charging. What is up with that? I used this cable because it was longer. It worked from day one, been using for several months until the update. How do I stop the updates, and go back to previous iOS? I hate being FORCED and harassed about the updates.
