I want to keep all my photos on my iMac but not on my iPad and iPhone. Am i missing something obvious? I'm still kind of a new apple user so I will apologize in advance for my ignorance on the matter

No problem - that is a personal choice
What is the problem you are having? What version of the OS do you have? What are your iCloud settings on each device?
