Mid 2009 iMac issue

I just turned on my cousins computer, and it’s a mid 2009 iMac. It’s not compatible with the high Sierra upgrade. If I upgrade the hard drive, is it possible to upgrade to high Sierra? Or am I just screwed?

I don't believe it's a harddisk issue

Upgrading the hard drive does not change the fact that

the rest of the hardware is not compatible with High Sierra.
