Photos screen saver loading blank photos

I have hundreds of photos in my photo library, but when I use the "Sliding Panels" screen saver and have it draw images from my photo library, it frequently includes blank/black photos in the mix. You can get an idea of it in this image:

Any idea why it is doing this? Does it have something to do with edited photos? (I have modified many of the photos in the library.) Thanks for any help.

. This image also shows another example of how some of the photos in my library DO show up, while others are just the blank placeholders.

What I did to get rid of the empty placeholders was to force the Mac to download all originals.

Create an album with all your photos, for example a smart album with the rule "Date is before 1.1.4000". This smart album should contain all your photos.

Now select all photos in this album, then add them to a standard album. For a standard album you should be able to ctrl-click the album, then select the option "Download originals to this Mac" for the album with all photos. This should start the download for the missing originals immediately.

The status of my Photo Library is....strange:

As you can see in that image, I have iCloud Photo Library turned on. However, I do not get the line at the bottom of the app that says when it was last updated. This image also shows another example of how some of the photos in my library DO show up, while others are just the blank placeholders.

No, I do not have it set to Optimize Storage:

And yes, I can edit all of the photos in my library. Strangely, however, if I choose to look at all the images in Photos and scroll to the top (where the oldest photos are), they show up as blank place holders (though it is clear, by the dimensions of those placeholders, that Photos knows the dimensions of each image):

I can open, view, and edit any one of these images in this screenshot, but in the thumbnail view, the great majority of them do not show up.
