Mid 2014 MacBook Pro A1398 Randomly Shuts Down

This machine has done this for so long I've been trying things here and there. Here are some things I have tried

- Most recently I had the board service by a reputable tech and the problem persists (re-beaded / replaced a couple chips that were common problems).

- Reset SMC/PRAM

- Tried a new SSD module

- Tried new memory

- Reinstalled multiple times

- Installed and booted / ran from external drive

- Top of the line thermal paste

The computer checks out with ASD and other system diagnostics. Runs cool. Clean as a whistle. Everything says this should be a great laptop.

However - it randomly (sometimes it has "fits" and sometimes it stays on for an hour or two) shuts down. Screen goes black (backlight still on) and it proceeds to shutdown. When I turn it back on it does NOT give me the shutdown due to a problem UNLESS I hold the power button after the screen goes dark and force it down. Seems as though it shuts down normally.

Also when opening back up - it seems to have "forgotten" the last 30 seconds or so of what I was doing.

I have inspected logs to pieces it seems they just stop - and I see the bootlog entry. Nothing that stands out at me. Before I started writing this I did unplug my power adapter and it happened right then.. likely coincidental cause it is not repeatable.

I am currently in safe mode and it seems to be working fine. I was hoping this could rule out my Iris chip but since it's the ONLY graphics chip in here I suppose it doesn't. Totally lost! Any help would be much appreciated.

I deleted my system log and booted to safe mode hoping it would act up but I will have to post this - go back to regular mode - let it misbehave and then post the log then.

My 2014 MBP is now fixed via non-Apple help (thank goodness Apple provides these forums!). I bought the $10 fix from https://realmacmods.com/product/macbook-pro-nocrash-utility/ and it's worked beautifully. I understand there's a similar fix for free if you're willing to install and run Python which is available here: Dropbox - Macbook Shutdown Fix.pdf (From what I understand the Real Mac Mods simply embeds a similar Python script in the app they provide for $10). There is another free fix available here Home | Random Shutdown on Macbook Pro if you're willing to disable your Thunderbolt Ethernet functionality. For me, the Real Mac Mods app purchase worked fine - $10 and ~10 min to download and activate and I haven't had a crash since.

So my issue is resolved....

Here is what I did:

after reading through the forums and searching extensively online I did a search online and found the fixes that people are mentioning on here. It seemed though as a temp fix. I spoke to many apple gurus that I know and they said it seemed more like a hardware issue. Memory or a main board. I also read on another forum that a user said the Apple Store replaced their logic board and it still didn't fix the issue.

I called apple support and ran through their list of things to try remedy the problem, the last thing on their list was to reinstall the OS (not a clean install). As you might have expected, that didn't work. 30 min after the reinstall of the OS the computer restarted on its own.

I then went to the Apple store and had them run their local diagnostic on my computer to which it passed that test with flying colors. Then the tech ran the video test on my machine and it kept hanging up on that test. He closed the computer and said it would have to be sent to the "depot" for further inspection and a determination of what was causing the restart. (the entire time thinking it was a software issue).

A few days later the Apple store contacted me to advise that the computer was ready for pickup and all was fixed. In disbelief I showed up to the Apple store and was presented my computer and an invoice with the parts that were replaced.

As of today; more than 2 weeks later my computer has not restarted on its own at all. Its also important to note that there were no configuration changes or clean installs that Apple did to my computer while in their possession.

Perhaps this isn't the problem for everyone, but I hope it helps you all figure out your issues.

Hi all,

Just to give you all an update. I took my laptop in to an Apple store for a motherboard replacement. It did not work. They then thought it was the wifi card. It did not work.

This is not a hardware issue, it's very sloppy software by Apple. It's due to the CPU and power management software via recent updates to almost all supported operating systems. They don't have any records of this bug because the crash doesn't really create a error log.

I highly recommend going to apple and citing the second discussions thread, so they can escalate the issue and fix their silly software.

Here are very relevant links that will help you (the macrumors forum is the best fix for this. Do not pay for a fix and you do not need to replace your motherboard etc etc as the so called Genius's will tell you).

Hey guys!

It's only been a few hours, so maybe I'll find out otherwise, but I believe I may have found a (what seems to be at least) temporary fix until Apple gets their heads on straight so I thought I would share!

Check out this link:

If you run into a permissions issue (I did, even after disabling csrutil), just rename the AppleThunderboltNHI.kext file to AppleThunderboltNHI.kext.BAK directly in file explorer, enter your password and it should do the trick.

I will try to update this thread if I find that this does not fix the problem, but I've been going on a couple hours now and my MacBook has not shut down, even after trying to respond to this thread previously almost 10 times BEFORE I tried this.

I hope it works, not only for me, but for you all as well. Fingers crossed!!

Same here, (late 2013 MBP) started in December '17 and haven't been able to fix it yet. Ran diagnostics with apple at the genius bar and went through logs with no fix found. They suggested to make a new user, so I'll try that next to fix it.

My computer actually shut down in the middle of trying to write out this response...

Just as an update-

New user did not fix it, clean install of High Sierra did not fix it. Did full overnight diagnostics and cleaning at Apple, full reinstall of software and firmware at Apple, and they ran a 4K video stream for 7 hours, during which it functioned 100% normally. They gave it back after passing all tests, and it shut down within 20 minutes of use on Safari on a clean install. Brought it in again and their only remaining suggestion was that maybe it was a faulty logic board.

So rather than dumping money into it to potentially fix it, I picked up a new 2017 15" MBP. Gonna sell this on eBay as-is and hope someone else can make sense of it.

Best of luck to everyone else and post if you manage to find a solution!

Mine too. It’s been a super dependable machine for three years. My work situation changed, I wiped the computer and after reinstalling the OS and upgrading to High Sierra, that’s when the problem started. I’ve reset SMC, re-reinstalled High Sierra and the computter still shuts down randomly. With power plugged in So not a battery issue. I think it’s a software issue as it seems to run without shutting down in guest / browser only safe mode. But I don’t have a fix yet.

My 2017 MBP, running 10.3.2 (High Sierra) apparently did the same thing, shut down randomly, the last thing in the system.log prior to reboot was the same line about MobileAssetUpdater:

Jan 20 16:15:49 sdesadmins-MacBook-Pro fud[86902]: objc[86902]: Class MobileAssetUpdater is implemented

in both /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileAccessoryUpdater.framework/Support/fud (0x103760e10) a

nd /System/Library/AccessoryUpdaterBundles/ApplePowerAccessoryUpdater.bundle/Conte nts/MacOS/ApplePowerA

ccessoryUpdater (0x1037f28f8). One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.

My 2013 MacBook Pro has the same issue now. I looked at the log and show:

MacBook-Pro fud[669]: objc[669]: Class MobileAssetUpdater is implemented in both /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileAccessoryUpdater.framework/Support/fud (0x10c2d1e10) and /System/Library/AccessoryUpdaterBundles/ApplePowerAccessoryUpdater.bundle/Conte nts/MacOS/ApplePowerAccessoryUpdater (0x10c3df8f8). One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.

I show multiple entries of the same thing in the log. My laptop is restarting during sleep mode. I have tried everything that has been suggested in the forums to no avail. SMC, NVRAM, power setting scale back and nothing has worked.

Hey,

I'm having the same problem on my MBP 15'' (Mid 2014). I tried about 10 times to reply to your post before just saying forget it and using my desktop. Shuts down on its own anywhere from 5 min to 4 hours, unpredictable, though I do find it happens in bunches for some reason. Also forgets what I was doing the last 30 seconds or so. You have described to the T what I am experiencing.

I tried all of the debugging processes and attempts to repair like reinstalling the OS as well.

Hoping Apple finally pays attention to this. I see in some of the replies that people say it was an update from December or so, and that until then their MBP's had been working just fine. I find that extremely interesting / strange.

I just received mine last week on Tuesday (bought from macofalltrades.com), bought refurbished. I'm worried about keeping it in the case that is not just a software update issue and is actually a hardware issue. However, I took it to the geniuses as well and their diagnostic reported that all tests were passed.

Has Apple replied to anyone on this thread yet asking for more information and/or suggestions?

Any additional tips or information people have learned would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

Apple, please hear our prayers!!

Exact same experience. This is absurd spend 3 days trying to track down the problem on my Late2013 MBP, in the end gave up though is some sort of odd memory corruption.

Bought a brand new MBP 2017 did a TimeMachine transfer of the old Macbook to the new one and I just got the a random restart with same logs with nothing descriptive! It's a totally crazy software issue. This is absurd to not write something in the logs. Apple really needs to sort this one out, ASAP.
