Boot Camp: LaCie Thunderbolt 2 device not recognized in Windows 10

Hello,

Could you please help me? I really..really…really need some insight and expertise on this issue that I’m having with my windows 10 under the boot camp partition. Let me prep my issue with a little backstory. I’ll try to keep it as short as possible but detailed as much as I can, I promise . I followed the instructions to the T on the “How to Install Windows 10 on a Mac using Boot Camp Assistant” on YouTube via the 9to5mac Channel. I was so happy and relieved when everything worked properly! I installed everything on my MacBook Pro (Retina 13" [Early 2013] 3 GHz, i7, 8Gb Ram, 512G SSD). Here is my issue, when I plugged in my LaCie 4TB external hard drive using Thunderbolt 2.0 cable into the thunderbolt port it won’t recognized at all however I could fill my hard drive running when I placed my hand on it to see if it was running. Below is a picture of the external hard drive I'm referring to:

Now, in my mind I was thinking “OH NO!” not a hardware issue. Thank God it wasn’t. I tested the same hard drive on the same MacBook Pro under the Mac partition and it worked fine and was being recognized. Another thing I noticed was that when I restart my MacBook Pro and boot into Windows 10 while the Lacie 4TB hard drive still plugged into the Thunderbolt port it recognizes it and works fine with no problems. I was able to transfer and store files and all but when I unplugit (properly) it goes right back to what I stated previously. It won’t recognize but I can feel the hard drive running. For further reassurance I tested the external hard drive on my MacBook Air (2015 13.3' i7 2.2GHZ 8GB 512GB) and it was recognized as well. Now I’m thinking it’s got to be a driver issue under the Windows partition on my MacBook Pro. After searching through a plethora of forums I downloaded the Intel and LaCie drivers that I thought would solve my problems however nothing changed and my LaCie external hard drive still isn’t being recognized.

Frustrated at the issue I went to the Apple store near me to see if they could help. They went to different driver forum sites (as I did before) and asked a few people at the Genius bar that were extremely too busy to look into my issue and I walked out still no prevail and nothing is working. The only thing they did was format my external hard drive to exFAT but it was already formatted that way before I walked in. To sum everything up, under the Windows Boot Camp partition my external hard drive is not being recognized via the Thunderbolt port when using the built in Thunderbolt 2 cable. Sidebar when I tried using the 3.0 cable port on the external of the external hard drive nothing was recognized either under the Windows partition either. Now I’m at my wits end and very frustrated with this whole ordeal and I wanted to reach out to someone who has way more knowledge on this than me or you might have experienced the same issue I’m going through with this in the past before. PLEASE if anyone has anytime to read this and suggest or recommend anything to me on what I should do I would greatly appreciate it so much! Thank you for your time and a great and safe holiday!

Sincerely,

J_411

PS: I apologize for the lengthy question but I wanted to make it as detailed as possible.

From About Thunderbolt ports and displays - Apple Support,

Use Thunderbolt ports with Boot Camp and Windows 7, 8, or 10

If you use Thunderbolt ports with Windows 7, 8, or 10 in Boot Camp, please note:

  • Thunderbolt devices are "hot pluggable," or usable without a restart, in some cases.Windows 8 or 8.1 on all 2014 and later Mac computers support hot plugging.
  • A Mac that uses Windows 7, 8, or 10 doesn't sleep when you plug in a Thunderbolt device.
  • Windows 7, 8, and 10 don’t support Target Display Mode or Target Disk Mode on a Thunderbolt-capable iMac.
  • If you use the Taskbar tool to eject a Thunderbolt device and then reconnect, your computer won't recognize it. You must first restart your computer. This is also true if you disconnect the Thunderbolt cable.
  • If your Apple notebook computer hibernates because its battery is low, all Thunderbolt devices disconnect. To reconnect your devices, connect to power, wake the system, and restart your computer.
  • If you insert an ExpressCard into your MacBook Pro while a Thunderbolt device is connected, your Mac doesn’t recognize the ExpressCard. To use your ExpressCard slot, disconnect or eject the Thunderbolt device.
  • Using a device in Target Disk Mode with Windows on a USB-C equipped Mac is not supported.

Based on this, your Early 2013 does not support 'hot-plugging'. You need to boot into Windows with the drive already connected for it to be visible on the Windows side.
