What iPhone do you have?

If you have an iPhone 4, you cannot upgrade past 7.1.2.

If you have an iPhone 4S, you CAN upgrade to iOS 9.

The iPhone 5 and 5C can be upgraded to iOS 10, and the iPhone 5S can be upgraded to iOS 11.

Recycle your obsolete one and buy a new one that supports the newer software.
