Did you delete the previous phone from your cars settings? It may be looking for that phone, which requires you to choose the newer phone. Also, if both phones had the same name, change the name on the new phone. Go to Settings > About and change the phone name.

Once you've done that. Have your car forget the new phone, then pair it again.

Hello daverk48,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are having an issue with using your iPhone with your car stereo. To help resolve this issue, please follow these steps in this resource, including contacting Subaru for possible updates for the stereo.

If you're using Bluetooth

  1. Check your car stereo's user manual for how to pair with a Bluetooth device.
  2. Go to Settings > Bluetooth, and turn off Bluetooth. Wait for 5 seconds, then turn Bluetooth back on.
  3. Restart your iOS device.
  4. On your iOS device, unpair your car stereo. On your car's display, unpair your iOS device and any other devices. Restart your car and your iOS device, then pair and connect again.
  5. Update your iOS device.
  6. Install any firmware updates for your car stereo.
  7. If you still can't connect, contact Apple Support.

The problem isn't that the phone won't connect at all. It's that I have to tell it to every time. With my 6s I could just start the car and the phone would connect automatically without me doing anything after the first time. The 8 plus works fine if I go into settings/bluetooth find the car and click on connect. But having to do it every time I get in the car is annoying. Especially since the old phone didn't require that.
