"Critical Update" loop

Hiya!

My MacBook Pro, unexpectedly and unprompted, shut off today and when it booted back up it claimed there was a "critical software update" that needed to be installed. So, naturally, I chose a WiFi network and did the update. Mind you, this was before getting to the log in screen. After this, I noticed that my wireless mouse wasn't working. It turns out the USB-C ports on the left side weren't working. I've done research online and the consensus is an SMC reset is required. I did one and I'm not entirely sure if it worked as the prompt came up once again. Thinking I may have done it incorrectly, I tried again to no avail. At this point, I'm using my USB-C adapter (Satechi brand) on the right side and plugging the computer into the good port on the left side. Has anyone else had this problem?

I had the same issue on the morning of 12-23. Tried every reset as well as reinstalling backups, new OS, but it still would go back to the same “critical software update needed” screen. I took it into Apple and they are now sending it off to the techs to open it up, to make sure nothing mechanical is causing this. Pretty certain I haven’t spilled any liquids and the power hasn’t gone out so I don’t know if they’ll find anything broken but we’ll see. I should hear back after the 1st. I’m just glad I have insurance and a desktop pc at work. I’ve seen other posts about this update loop so we’re not the only ones. (2017 15” MBP)
