should i update my apple watch series 1 from 3.2.3 to 4.2?

I had it on my Apple Watch 1st Gen (Series 0) and it became increasingly less unresponsive over the months it was on, and eventually became a glitchy, unresponsive mess. Touch screen was unresponsive, watch wouldn't wake up, on screen buttons wouldn't respond. It was frustrating. Apple just replaced it with a Series 1, with 3.2.3 and I am reluctant to trust the dual core processor to somehow tackle all the issues my single core unit had, and still have power to spare. I am inclined to stay forever at 3.2.3.

Thoughts?

there are articles that tout the benefits of WatchOS 4.X, but also acknowledge that Series 3 is the only watch it is really written to run on, in spite of being available to all editions. Those articles state that sluggishness, screen response issues and overall slow downs can be found on the Series 2, 1, and 0. Since I already lived with a Series 0 that was a total dog under 4.X, and I can't take it back to Watch OS 3.2.3 if I'm not happy, I would have to sell it and buy a new one. I am looking forward to a few hundred... "My Series 1 runs like a dream under WatchOS 4.X" responses before I take the plunge again.

Simple answer.... yes

I have had no problems in doing this with my original watch. Updated every time there was a new release. About once a week I turn off my watch just before putting it on charge overnight. I don’t know if that does any good but have a gut feel about it.

Replaced the watch with series 3 for no other reason than because I can. My friend is delighted with my old watch.

I have always updated my Apple devices with the latest OS as soon as it was released and the only problem I have had was with old 32 bit apps which do not work on IOS11. (5, 5s,6,6s,X,MacBook oh and a few iPads) and all I can say after 50 years of computing experience is. They just work.

Hi

For the best performance from your iPhone and Apple Watch, be sure to install compatible updates for iOS, watchOS and for third-party apps as and when they are released.

In addition to any new features that may be added, updates often include bug fixes and/or important security updates.

Start by making a backup of your iPhone.

Thanks! I had the original and it started out at normal speed, with a few, occasional glitches, and within a month or so the touch screen responsiveness went down, I kept having random days of 12 hour battery life (off the charger at 7am, on the charger again by 7pm), and buttons within apps simply not responding at all. That and really notable speed issues. So, now that I have the Series 1 as replacement, I am reluctant to go up to 4.2 and risk having it start again.

i need to correct my phrasing... WatchOS 4.X is supposed to run on all series, but it was actually written for use on the Series 3. So, the Series 2, 1, and 0 will run it, and enjoy some benefits. But, not necessarily be optimized by it. Some folks on Series 0 will be fine (or, like me, fine for a little while), while others will have a sluggish, glitchy, battery draining mess. Some Series 2, and 1 users will enjoy nothing but benefits. Others will end up losing speed, responsiveness and battery life.

Apple has already replaced my watch once, based solely upon performance. The hardware tested fine. If I upgrade to WatchOS 4 and the trouble starts all over, who knows if they will support me and I only have until January.

So... I need some pretty infallible odds to make the jump.

Thanks

That's what has me puzzled Jonathan. My iPhone IS connected to the internet. Messages and alerts are coming through to the watch normally. I have done a number of updates and never run into this before.

Instructions on upload include "make sure Apple Watch is connected to Wi-Fi," My iPhone says it is downloading the update to the watch and then that it is preparing the update, but the watch face does not indicate that anything is going on on that side. The error message at the end is that "The watchOS update couldn't be verified because you are not connected to the internet" when in fact I am.

I have tried rebooting both the watch and the iPhone. No difference. The iPhone shows both a strong cellular and Wi-Fi signal. Content comes right up in Safari and mail is working normally.
