How to unlock locked files

I created a .dmg drive and all files are locked and I can only read them.

How do I make it all unlocked?

It just dawned on me that the dmg is like CD rom where you cannot edit files. duh.

I dragged the folder out of the dmg drive and saved them on my desktop folder. I can now edit.

You mean the files into the DMG? In this case the DMG is probably read only. You need to convert it: Konvertieren einer Image-Datei im Festplattendienstprogramm auf dem Mac - Apple Support or create a new one.
