Use iTunes to Restore the iPod.

When you connect the iPod to your iTunes Library, look on the Summary pane and use the Restore iPod... button. This wipes all content from the iPod.

Note though:

  • a Restore will not remove any updates to the iPod's operating system. However, this should not be a problem as the Classic's operating system is very stable (despite what anyone may tell you).
  • If you are intending to sell the iPod, I suggest you avoid terms such as "like new" and "factory condition" because neither statement will be true (and it could land you in hot water with a disgruntled buyer). The iPod's battery has a limited life, as does the hard drive. Neither will be in factory condition now or after a Restore.
