I am seeing two different model numbers for the 30GB Black iPod. Amazon.com lists these as 5th generation (MA146LL/A) and 5.5 Generation (MA446LL/A). I ordered a refurbished 30 GB Black iPod on apple.com just yesterday (MA146LL/A), and I was curious to know if there was any difference between these two models.

I'm new to the iPods and have never used them before. Would appreciate any inputs I can get.

Sorry, doesn't appear to find the link...
    here's a cut and paste!!!!!!????

The Fifth Generation iPod (Late 2006) serial number's last three digits will be one of the following: V9K, V9P, V9M, V9R, V9L, V9N, V9Q, V9S, WU9, WUA, WUB, WUC, and X3N.

MA146LL/A is the 5th gen 30 gig black, previous to the Late 2006 product refresh. So it lacks the Search feature and has less video playback time.

    Hey John,
I still dont have the unit, so cannot verify the serial number. I only wanted to confirm regarding the model numbers....

Thanks for the inputs! Do you think it would be a major difference? Pardon my ignorance, but I've never used an iPod ever before.....

Follow up question - should I go ahead and cancel my order and go for the "Late 2006 product refresh" instead?

As I stated, the only real differences are the loss of the Search feature, and less battery life during video playback. And a slightly less bright screen I believe, though as it stands I find my screen plenty bright and I crank down the brightness pretty low.

Hey, thanks a lot for your inputs!

The order I place yday has already been shipped, so I guess I'll wait for it to arrive and see how I like it. And again, this was a refurbished model I ordered off of the apple website, and I'm hoping I will not have any major problems.
