Airport Express with linksys Router EA7500

Hi,

I have two airport express and one Airport Extreme. Everything was connected to each other things were fine. Now last couple of months the Airport Extreme restarts when I start playing a video or download some heavy files. hence I bought a Linksys EA7500. Now my question here is that...

I am trying to extend my WiFi Signal using my two airport Express connected to Linksys router via Wifi. I used Airport utility selected add new existing network and it said successful and shows green light but my wifi signal is the same. Very low.

Can I connect the linksys router EA7500 with Airport Express? It is wireless Extender so it should work right?

Can some one help me with this?

Thanks!

I am trying to extend my WiFi Signal using my two airport Express connected to Linksys router via Wifi.

Unfortunately, that won't work, since Apple has designed their "extend a wireless network" feature to only work with other Apple routers. The Express cannot wirelessly extend the signal from a third party wireless router.

I used Airport utility selected add new existing network and it said successful and shows green light but my wifi signal is the same. Very low.

The AirPort Express been set up to "Join a wireless network". It can be used for AirPlay or to connect a remote USB printer, but the AirPort Express cannot "extend" or "repeat" the wireless signal in any way when it joins a third party wireless network. That's why you see no signal improvement over the wireless.

Can I connect the linksys router EA7500 with Airport Express?

Yes, but the AirPort Express must connect to the Linksys router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection. If you cannot run the Ethernet cabling, you might want to take a look at Ethernet over Powerline adapters to try to send an Ethernet signal over the existing AC wiring in your home.

Already answered this for you above. Here it is again:

Post back when you have the Ethernet cabling installed that will run from each AirPort Express location back to the Linksys router and we'll go over the setup. You can run Ethernet cabling up to 300+ feet, so you should not have any problems with signal loss.

Sorry, I am confused. This information sounds as if you are using the Linksys as your wireless router, not the AirPort Extreme.

The AirPort Extreme must be the device that is providing your wireless signal on the network if you want the AirPort Express(es) to wirelessly extend that signal.

If you power off both AirPort Express devices, can all of your devices connect to the wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme and get a good Internet connection that way?

If they can, then I'm not sure why you need the Linksys router, since you now have two devices both providing a wireless network signal. You will have to reset the AirPort Expresses and set them up again to extend the AirPort Extreme wireless network. The Expresses cannot extend the signal from the Linksys router.

If you want the second express connecting by wireless to the first.. then the automatic setup should do it without any intervention on your part.

However it is much better to use ethernet.. or use none more wireless AP than absolutely necessary.. simply adding another express because you have one is pointless.. and will actually cause things to slow down not speed up.

In the end if the wireless still has penetration issues.. more ethernet is needed.. and higher power AP with AC wireless.. not the Express tiddlers.

Let me see if I can help.

I guess first thing I would do is warranty return if your Time Capsule (TC) is less than 3 years old.. normal warranty for one year.. and applecare on computer or ipad or appleTV for another 2 years.. is that a possible??

If out of warranty.. plug the time capsule into EA7500 by ethernet and set it in bridge mode.. wireless off if you think it is a problem.. but I would test with wireless on as well.. but it is better if the TC is located at the other end of your house where you need better wireless. The Express can also plug into the TC and simple setup as wireless access.

The auto setup on the Mac or ipad airport utility should handle it. Give it a go and post screenshots.. I cannot help much without screenshots if you run into trouble.

1. Should I connect the cable from linksys to WAN port or ETHERNET port on Airport Express?

WAN for setup.. later on it makes no difference.

2. On Airport Utility - Do I need to setup a new connection?

Yes. exactly as follows.

1. Click on Other Wi-Fi Devices (1) then click on your Express.. I am using an extreme.. but same thing.

2. On the first screen that comes up choose other options in the lower left corner..

3. Create a new network.

4. Fill in the names..

Same wireless name as your Linksys if you want it roaming.. up to you though if you want the airports on a different name. Give same password if you use the same name.

5. Hopefully it will complete successfully.

6. You can then open it in the airport utility and click the icon.. it will give you a summary page.

Voila.. done.

Suggest that you get the first Express up and running correctly. If you followed the steps that LaPastenague provided, the AirPort Express will be automatically set up in Bridge Mode, meaning that DHCP and NAT are turned off.

When you are ready to configure the second Express, temporarily move it close to the first Express

Power up the second Express for a minute or two, then hold in the reset button on the back of the device for 7-8 seconds

Release the reset button and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light status

On the iPad....

Go to the Home Screen

Tap on Settings

Tap on WiFi

Tap on AirPort Express under the listing of Setup New AirPort Base Station

User uploaded file

The setup 'wizard" will open up and suggest that the second Express will extend the network of the first Express

Enter a device name for the Express

Tap Next

The "wizard" will set up everything for you automatically and correctly.

When you see the message of Setup Complete, tap Done

Now move the second Express to the area where it is needed. The more that is has line-of-sight with the first Express, the better the network will operate

Before we get started, I need to clarify some things.

1) I understand you have the current versions of the AirPort Express.....the one with 2 Ethernet ports, correct?

2) I understand that you will be permanently connecting the first AirPort Express back to the Linksys router using an Ethernet cable, correct?

3) I understand that you want the second AirPort Express to connect to the first AirPort Express using wireless, correct?

4) What device will you be using to set up the AirPort Express? A Mac? PC? iPhone / iPad? If you have a Mac, I assume that it is running a current or recent version of the Mac operating system, correct?

5) You are asking about the AirPort Extreme. If you have turned off the WiFi on the AirPort Extreme, how do you plan to use the AirPort Extreme on the network? What will it do? Frankly, if you have turned off the WiFi on the AirPort Extreme, and you are using the Linksys as your router, I do not understand why you even need the AirPort Extreme at all.

Thanks for the quick reply.

While reading your last point I realized my Airport Extreme is connected on Ethernet. Then I should be able to connect Airport express right?

As I see my Airport Extreme works fine on connecting to ethernet but not on wifi.

As of now I have connected extreme to access my 2TB time capsule but the bridge mode is off, Wifi is OFF.

Can you help me setup the express with extreme (I don't want to switch on Wifi for extreme)?

Dec 25, 2017 6:43 PM in response to Bob Timmons

Airport Extreme - Has WiFi issue. When I download heavy files or watch a video via Wifi on my Extreme the router restarts but if i do the same connected to computer with a cable from extreme it is fine.

I am not able to fix the WiFi issue on Apple extreme I bought a Linksys router.

Here is what I have now:

ISP to Linksys router to my computer (Wired), Other devices via (WiFi) and also my Airport Extreme (Wired - with WiFi Off) to access my time capsule.

Since the signal is not great I am using two Airport express in different rooms to extend my WiFi signal.

So in your last message you said we can connect Airport express to linksys (via ethernet) and extend the wifi signal.

As I am not able to connect express to linksys via ethernet.

Since Airport Extreme is already connected to linksys (via ethernet) and Airport express can only work with Airport Extreme, I thought using the above logic I should be able to connect both Airport Express to Extreme and extend my WiFi Signal right?

If so can you help me setup this please?

Let me know if you got my idea. Will explain even better.

Thanks!

5. Airport Extreme has 2TB drive. I want to access those files. I have connected that to linksys through LAN ports.

Is your airport extreme 2TB hard disk plugged into USB? Or is it internal.. in which case it is not an airport extreme.. it is a Time Capsule.. which confuses lots of people. Apple made two similar products.. current model tall AC wireless Extreme and TC are externally identical.. just the TC has internal hard disk.
