How do I edit photos taken with my iPhone 7 with my iPad 2? It tells me that the format is not compatible.

I'm trying to edit photos taken with my iPhone 7 with my iPad 2 (stored on the cloud), but I keep getting an error saying that the format is incompatible and I need to upgrade to IOS 11... which isn't available for the iPad 2... yet.

I bought the iphone7 for the camera, its screen is too small for editing.

Is there a setting I'm missing or do I just need to wait until a monkey flips a switch?

iPad 2 Wi-Fi, iOS 10.3.3

If your iPhone 7 is running iOS 11, it may now be taking photos in the new HEIC format.

Your iPad cannot process this format, because that will require iOS 11.

Set your iPhone to take photos in a more compatible format. This is explained in this document: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207022#working

Though capturing in HEIF and HEVC format is recommended, you can capture media using older formats that are more broadly compatible with other operating systems and devices:

  1. In iOS 11, go to Settings > Camera.
  2. Tap Formats.
  3. Tap Most Compatible. This setting is available only on devices that can capture media in HEIF or HEVC format.
  4. All new photos and videos will now use JPEG or H.264 format. To return to using the space-saving HEIF and HEVC formats, choose High Efficiency.

To transfer the images that already have been taken in HEIF or HEVC to the iPad, use AirDrop or email.

When you share HEIF or HEVC media using other methods, such as AirDrop, Messages, or email, it's shared in a more compatible format, such as JPEG or H.264.

Thank you Léonie,

That was most helpful.

My question is probably obvious... if I change the settings on my iPhone so the photos are in the more compatible format is the image quality reduced?

If this is the case then there would seem to be little benefit to making that change as I purchased the phone for the camera's ability to take such high quality photos. I just assumed that the two devices would work together. So waiting for Apple to fix the compatibility issue would seem to be the best solution.

If this is not the case... then yay!
