Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities. From your post, I see that you'd like to be able to quickly respond to messages without leaving the app you're currently in. I'm happy to help!
If you have an iPhone 6s or later, you can use 3D Touch on the Notification when it pops up on your screen to interact with the message, including reply to it. Just press into the Notification as if you were pushing a physical button. You'll get a brief tactile, haptic vibration while the interaction pops up.
If you have an iPhone 6 or earlier, you can still respond right from the Notification itself. Check out the following information from Notifications - iPhone User Guide :
