I want to get into iCloud on a refurbished mac book air but no luck

I am trying to get this computer a macbook air which has been refurbished using OS X El Capitan Version 10.11.6

To get on iCloud so I can sing with my apple desk top and iPad but when I type in my password a verification number comes up but it still will not connect me. Thanks

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Are you entering the password plus the verification, e.g. if the password is ABC and the verification is 123, you will enter ABC123 together.
