So virtually the same size, if the bumper case still fits would be almost as useful as it was with the 6. But to be on the safe side best to get a case designed for the iPhone 8.

If you are happy with it then it will be fine. Does the glass of the screen or back of the case protrude beyond the height of the bumper?
Bumper cases offer minimal protection anyway and only protects against a certain kind of impact. Silicone bumpers absorb impact, and a solid metal redistribute it and reduce the level of deformation of the casing of the phone.

Looking at the side/profile of the phone can you see the screen/back of the phone or just the bumper?
