Voicemail not working with iPhone X

Visual voicemail transcript appears on the phone>voicemail app but when I try to play the audio message by tapping the play button it does not play. The "cursor" for the playback bar does not move. I spent two hours at an AT&T store only to have them escalate and spend 48 hours trying to fix it. They said the issue is not on their side and everything is working for voicemail on their servers associated with my account. I spent another hour and a half at an Apple store. They did a hard boot on the iPhone and the voicemails played for about an hour then reverted back to the same issue. I still cannot play the audio voicemails on my new iPhone X. My wife bought the same phone and does not have the same issue. Not sure what to do at this point since no one wants to provide a solution to this issue.

iPhone X, iOS 11.2.1

After a very long chat session with Apple Tech Support (thank you Erica) I have resolved this issue.

Go to Settings> General> Reset> Reset All Settings

This process will restore the phone's original settings but you will not lose data and is one step short of the factory reset, where you would want a back up before proceeding.

The first time I did this, the reset did not progress (i.e. the apple logo appeared but the status bar remained empty for over 15 minutes). I did a hard boot on the phone and tried reset all settings again and it took. Audio voicemail worked for the first time since upgrading to the iPhone X. NOTE: This process will wipe all your custom settings like sounds, background app refresh and your Apple Pay wallet will need to be set back up. Very annoying but necessary.

FYI: to hard boot on the iPhone X: 1) quickly press the volume up button 2) quickly press the volume down button 3) press and hold the display button on the upper right side of the phone as you're looking at it. IMPORTANT: continue to hold the third button down even after the off slider appears on the screen. This will shut down and restart your phone.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your post helped me out tremendously.

In my case I only had Hearing Aid Comp. on.

When I tried to turn on phone noise cancel. It popped up with the message. I allowed it to turn off hearing Aid and turn on noise cancellation. I then turned off noise cancellation as well. Just to make sure everything was off.

Tried voicemail - still didn’t work...

Did a hard reset - (click volume up, click volume down, hold pwr button until apple logo)

Verified that noise cancellation & hearing were off

Went to voicemail and they play. Note: there was a slight network delay when I clicked play but they did play

I then went back in and clicked noise cancellation and they still play.

If you are willing to spend a great deal of time and effort you can likely determine whether the problem is hardware or software related and, if software, whether it is a particular app you are running or some other factor that is causing the issue.

What would be involved would be to use your phone as a test instrument rather than a practical device for everyday use.

However, this is neither practical nor sensible for a user to do. Even if you did find the cause, it may not be possible for you to do anything to fix it.

The best thing would be to request a replacement phone since neither your carrier nor Apple can resolve the issue.

I have been working with Apple on this since early December after I got the X. I have done the thing of sending the files, which would not upload, all the resets, etc. It was escalated to a higher tier, but still not working.

Something I did discover, is if you connect to a blue tooth device (like the Sync on my F150) it will play over the speakers or even to a headset, but will not play over the phone speakers. I checked those speakers - I can play music, talk and hear over it, etc.

So have not discovered if it is some software glitch on select phones. Glad to see (also sad) that it is not just me.

I had this problem of voicemails not playing. In fact, no greeting could be recorded. I spent 4 hours at various levels of support with AT&T to check provisioning. They even brought Apple support on the line. We reset, reloaded and did just about everything including replacing the SIM card. The conclusion was that it was an IOS problem, not an AT&T problem. I followed this up with Apple's top tier support who worked directly with engineering. They, of course, were convinced that it was an AT&T problem or a hardware problem with my new iPhone X. They followed up by sending me a new iPhone X. After changing SIM cards and loading the new iPhone X from my iCloud backup the problem remained. The new iPhone X would not play voicemail nor record a greeting. I then started going through every configuration option ( all of which were the default settings ) and found the issue.

Here it is - in the Settings menu go to the General menu then to the Accessibility menu. You will find two settings that are most likely set to ON. They are Phone Noise Cancellation and Hearing Aid Compatibility. This seems to be a default setting from Apple. It is also an impossible setting because they are mutually exclusive. They both can't be on at the same time but something in the Apple IOS distribution kit sets them into a faulty configuration. Turn off Hearing Aid Compatibility ( just for grins try turning it back on - it will turn off Phone Noise Cancellation and give you an error message). Go to Visual Voicemail. You can probably play messages now. If not, power the phone off and on and voicemail and greeting recording should work.

I then went back to my original iPhone X and found the same configuration problem. I simply turned off Hearing Aid Compatibility and I could play all of the voicemails over the wifi connection ( the SIM card was in the other phone ). So this is NOT a carrier problem. It is a default ( or random ) settings problem with some IOS distributions.
