Hey there, Mordecai!

Thank you for visiting the Apple Support Communities. Reading your post, I see that the Touch Bar for your MacBook Pro isn't working as expected. Specifically, while you can interact with it--and you'll see the correct input on the display--the actual Touch Bar doesn't light up, so you don't see what you're selecting. I'm happy to help!

Based on what you've described is going on, I would first suggest restarting your computer, if you haven't already. You can do this by selecting the Apple  menu > Restart. Once the computer is back on, check to see if the Touch Bar responds as expected. If not, try resetting the SMC: How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support .

If the Touch Bar still isn't behaving as expected, boot into safe mode and see how it performs there: Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support .

More information on using the Touch Bar, including how it works in various situations, is discussed in How to use the Touch Bar on your MacBook Pro - Apple Support , and if you continue to have trouble with the Touch Bar after using it in safe mode, don't hesitate to respond back.

Have a lovely day!
