Stuck installing High Sierra

My iMac has been saying there is about 26 minutes remaining on the install but has made no progress at all for roughly 30 minutes. Should I continue to wait or cancel? The original install crashed my hard drive so I’m now attempting to install in recovery Mode. I’m on a fairly new iMac 2015 or 2016.

Hi there,

macOS High Sierra upgrade has created a lot of issues, but it can be resolved with the combo update, however for some reasons downloading it from Apple Store Updates has been a disaster for some of us... either couldn't install and when we eventually managed to install it, it created a lot of issues, such a slow system, crash finder, system freeze, spotlight issues... Luckily there is a way around it, anyway try this:

  • Reboot with the option key and get out of the macOS install drive and restart with your normal Mac drive
  • Check on App Store update if macOS High Sierra or 10.13.2 update has been installed
  • How to download macOS High Sierra - Apple Support
  • If not and the upgrade or update is not present on the available update download then download the macOS High Sierra or the combo update 10.13.2
  • Go directly to the macOS High Sierra page or
  • 10.13.2 Combo Update
  • Make sure you have a full backup, ideally time machine, as if there is anything going wrong it is the safest way to reinstall it from the recovery!
  • Update

Let me know if it helped and more importantly, in a later stage if it did the trick, as it seems that there are a high volume of issue with the upgrade to macOS High Sierra or the 10.13.2 update, and it would be important to inform other users of a way to resolve it!

Otherwise download Etrecheck, it is a system reporting app, widely used on Apple Communities forum, it gives a snapshot of the system and very often help to pinpoint issues. You can past the report here in and we'll see what we can find... Do not worry, it is perfectly safe and does not record any personal or sensitive data from your computer...

Good luck 😎

The time estimate can be wildly inaccurate. If you decide the installation will never finish, force the Mac to shut down by holding its power button for a long time (at least ten seconds or so). It may restart with the upgrade completely finished. Or, it might not restart at all. In any event you can't wait forever, so it's not as though you have much choice. Give it a few hours, at least.

As long as you created a Time Machine or equivalent backup according to Apple's upgrade instructions, there is no reason to be concerned about losing any of that Mac's data. If forcing the Mac to shut down results in an inability to boot, then boot macOS Recovery and restore the system from that backup.
