Apple Messages CoreAudio error

In Messages I get an error "Error due to CoreAdudio plug-in ....". This is on Messages on my MacBook running Sierra. When I open Messages it just immediately quits. This happened from one day to the next. Have talked to Apple, and after their researching the issue, and downloading my logs, and system stuff, and being on the phone for nearly 2 hours; getting back to after 2 days and then telling me that the "fix" is to upgrade to High Sierra! I am really frustrated. I should not have to upgrade my OS to get rid of this bug/error on their part (CoreAudio is an Apple Core component)! Besides I have thousands of dollars worth of 3rd party software (FileMakerPro, Adobe products, etc.) and I am not ready to shell out that money yet.

Any ideas?

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

I did what you suggested; made sure about backups. Booted unto Recovery mode. Ran Disk First Aid -which said there were no problems btw. Then I reinstalled Sierra fresh; then rebooted normally and ran the combo update. After a few hours I am not back up, and am trying things out to see if it's back to normal. Will give it a day or so and then report again.

thanks,

Pia

I don't know how to quit "com.logmein.driver.LogMeInSoundDrive" because I don't have LogMeIn installed on this computer. I did a Spotlight search for it, and according to Spotlight there is a file in my Safari History in my own Library; however, I cannot find that file in there. What happens if I delete all of the files in there?

thanks,

Pia

I have deleted all the History files and will see. What's also begun to happen is that Photos is now affected and crashes with the same AudioCore error; also when my iPhone X rings

FaceTime and/or Messages on my computer crashes immediately and cuts off the phone call. This is getting much worse instead of better. It seems that the last OS update I did was 19 December and that's about when my son sent me the 3 video files which I thought began this horrible situation. Could it be the software update 10.12.6?

Jan 10, 2018 11:02 AM in response to macpia

It's been 2 hours soon and so far no crashes of any kind! Yay!!! I hope I am not speaking too soon but it seems to have fixed the issue of the AudioCore plug in error.

Thanks for you help Eric! As I said in my initial request, Apple and I had been on the phone for hours, and they called me back twice but in the end told me that I had to upgrade to High Sierra which I cannot do at this time. Why they did not think of this, I don't know but I appreciate your help, patience and suggestions.

thanks,

Pia

I did try in another account which is also an Admin account. Messages opened fine, but only showed chats up to February of this year, and did not update to current time. I did make sure I was signed in to Messages.I only have the one account so am sure it was the right one.

If I boot in Safe Mode Messages opens and stays open. If I am super fast and can click to. choose another message from the one my son sent me which seems to have caused the crash, Messages stays open. My son sent me 3videos he had taken with his iPhone and after that is when Messages just began crashing and giving the CoreAudio error.

The update shouldn't have caused the problem.

Try running the combo update. It installs all previous updates plus the new one, which can replace any files that may have become corrupted. If you still are having problems after that, reinstall the OS.

macOS Sierra 10.12.6 Combo

Do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart) and select Recovery Volume. Run Disk Utility and select First Aid. Then re-install the OS.
