iCloud lost my 700GB data and can't recover them. What responsibility does Apple take?

iCloud was very unreliable and Apple support is very irresponsible to keep the data safe and recoverable, even if Apple keeps notifying me to upload data to iCloud for permanent storage. If icloud can't keep data safe, how can you continue this service to the world?

iPhone 7 Plus, iOS 11.1, null

You don't want to hear this, but I quote:

'TO THE GREATEST EXTENT PERMISSIBLE BY APPLICABLE LAW, APPLE DOES NOT GUARANTEE OR WARRANT THAT ANY CONTENT YOU MAY STORE OR ACCESS THROUGH THE SERVICE WILL NOT BE SUBJECT TO INADVERTENT DAMAGE, CORRUPTION, LOSS, OR REMOVAL IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE TERMS OF THIS AGREEMENT, AND APPLE SHALL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE SHOULD SUCH DAMAGE, CORRUPTION, LOSS, OR REMOVAL OCCUR. It is your responsibility to maintain appropriate alternate backup of your information and data.'

Yes. a few months ago, my stored data was about 1TB or so. When I accessed it again on the following day, it became 500GB or so. I contacted Apple Support, and they struggled several months and then told me they had no ability to recover them. Then, I keep iCloud untouched. But a few weeks ago, it suddenly became 300GB. It continued losing data, no matter I used that service or not. But Apple never stopped charging me on the monthly service.

I have to say, if you want to keep your data safe, do not use iCloud. It's just a joke, and the tech support will only be able to comfort you with words but no solution/action they can take.

from what I thought, no matter I have one backup or multiple backups, Apple should still keep the data safe at iCloud as their advertisement says. The key to complain to Apple was not that "customers lost data completely from anywhere", but "Apple lost customers' data and Apple doesn't have any backup/recovery plan to protect the data".

If iCloud is a mature product, Apple should have enough plan to keep data on "Cloud storage" safe.

I am on cloud storage business too, and when we keep customers' data, we keep multiple copies at the cloud side.

but it looked iCloud doens't have that mechanism, and once the data got lost, it's just simply lost.

I tried. but iCloud features made "Download All" very hard, and so it looks there is no easy way to download all data (especially multiple photos) from icloud to local or another cloud storage.

I read some posts on how to download all from icloud, but some iCloud action buttoms/links mentioned in those posts don't exist on my screen(lots of others have the same problem with me). so iCloud download All feature is a mystery too: it's easy to upload, but very hard to download.

Thanks for the explanation, Roger.

But their initial message led me to iCloud was still quite misleading. When my iPhone storage was almost full, iCloud showed me a message saying that you can keep your files/data/videos/photos to iCloud for permanent storage and delete your local data to gain more space. It didn't state that iCloud was mainly for sync'up, but emphasized on storage and permanent storage. I thought Apple brand is reliable, and trusted Apple, which turned to be wrong.

I understand a physical media is not reliable, but cloud storage brought a different level of services due to the cloud service's nature: the server side has backup/recovery mechanism, especially, Apple/iCloud brandname are quite fooling people like me. I intended to think Apple/iCloud are quite reliable, but then many cases showed me that they are not trustworthy AT ALL. Their tech support lacks knowledge seriously and often provided contradicted information (I have many examples from their email and voice recording, which they gave A answer on day 1 and then changed to B answer on day 2, and then back to A on day 3... while A and B are completely opposite.

So the only useful knowledge I got from my bad Multiple experiences(not only this icloud data loss issue) with Apple is that NOT to Trust Apple and iCloud. Their technology are VERY WEAK and their attitude towards customers' interests are VERY POOL.

The thing is, iCloud is a domestic-level product basically aimed at allowing people to sync their various Apple devices. It's also quite inexpensive. If you go to a service such as Amazon S3 or Rackspace you get multiple server backups, widely spread geographically, and general design for professional use. It is, inevitably, more expensive. Basically, you get what you pay for. As Crashburner points out, whether you are using an online backup, or a local hard disk, a burning to DVDs, or anything else, you need multiple backups. Any single backup may fail sooner or later - just as in earlier times parchment or paper could disintegrate, photographs could fade, tape recordings could lose their magnetization, laser disks could leak and then find the aluminium disk within corrode and lose data... The key to peace is constructive neurosis.
