Close apps on the series 3 Apple Watch

I recently purchased the series 3 Apple Watch GPS+ Cellular I cannot figure out how to close apps after using them. You can swipe and a delete message appears. I am afraid that by tapping delete it will delete the App. What is the best way to close App? Any suggestions would be appreciated. All the information I have been able to find does not appear to work. Thank you
