Installer Disk Could Not Be Found

I'm trying to help my uncle set up a windows partition on a Mid 2011 iMac running Sierra 10.12.6., with a 500GB hard drive. It has over 400 GB of space available, and we had planned on creating a 100 GB partition. We've formatted a 64 GB USB thumb drive to exFAT, Master Boot Record. Downloaded the Windows 8.1 64bit ISO file. I placed the file (exactly as I downloaded it, not opened) on the thumb drive. We started Boot Camp Assistant. Checked the boxes for "Download the latest Windows support software from Apple" and "Install Windows 7 or 8". Hit the continue button. Successfully downloaded the support software to the thumb drive. When it finishes loading and saving the support software, we get the message "Installer Disk Could Not Be Found. Insert your Windows installer disc and wait a few seconds for the disk to be recognized."

What are we doing wrong? Any help would be much appreciated.

You need to use a physical DVD on Macs that have a built-in Optical drive. Using a USB Installer is not supported on Macs which have a built-in Optical drive. The only exception to this rule are the 2012 Macs, which can use either/both.

If you did not download the ISO from an official website, I highly recommend that you use Microsoft's Download Windows 8.1 Disc Image (ISO File) page.

The ISO can be burned to a single DVD-R SL blank (Sony, Verbatim, Memorex, HP brands are recommended) by right-clicking on the ISO and selecting Burn from the menu. Expand the Burn dialog to look like the following and choose the lowest burn rate to avoid media block errors.

User uploaded file

If the DVD mounts properly and shows up in Finder, run BC Assistant and click on Install. The Download options only download the drivers to a USB2 flash drive (do not use a USB3 flash drive). Once Windows is fully installed, run setup.exe from the Bootcamp folder to install drivers.

Microsoft does not publish the MD5sum. I ask users to post their MD5sum and compare it to what I have. If two copies are identical, they will produce the same sum confirming that they match the source at Microsoft.

Assuming your file is located on the Desktop, this is what you should get.

openssl md5 /Users/XXXXXX/Desktop/Win8.1_English_x64.iso

MD5(/Users/XXXXXX/Desktop/Win8.1_English_x64.iso)= e0d4594e56c0545d379340e0db9519a5

Post the ISO file name and its MD5sum before you burn it to a blank DVD.

We also had to change the format to exFAT from MSDOSfat32 because the ISO file is larger than 4.0 GB.

The ISO file itself is larger than 4GB, but the entire file is not copied to the USB2, but it's contents. The largest file is install.wim which is about 3.6GB.

According to MacTracker, his mid 2011 21.5" iMac should have a SuperDrive to burn the DVD. I have some DVD-R discs, and I'll take my 2009 MBP over with it's SuperDrive just in case.

We will set it to burn at the lowest possible burn rate speed.

Please post the filename/MD5 before you Burn, otherwise you will waste media.

On a separate note, when we get Windows 8.1 up and running on his iMac, do we just copy his old files and programs from his Dell PC onto thumb drives and transfer all that info to the Windows partition that way?

You should only transfer non-OS files from the Dell PC to the Mac. I suggest looking at Move your data from a Windows PC to your Mac - Apple Support . Transferring OS-specific files will cause issues with Windows on Mac due to driver of conflicts.

I appreciate your fast response. I've left my uncle's place for the night. So, I'll have to try that tomorrow or in a day or two. He has an old Dell PC that might have come with a Windows 8 install disc. Would that disk work? Or could I burn the ISO file we downloaded onto a DVD disk and would that work? I've been an Apple only computer owner since my first Apple IIe back in the 80's, I've never had to really deal with Windows. In the last few months my uncle has converted to Apple. A new iPhone, iPad, and he purchased this refurbished iMac a month ago and would like to set it up so he can move his old files from the Dell PC.

Thanks again for your help.

Thank you for your prompt response.

We did download the Windows 8.1 ISO file directly from the Microsoft site. We are also using a USB 2.0 thumb drive. We figured that one out already. Uncle had just bought a USB 3.0 thumb drive, and we were having problems. I used one of my USB 2.0 drives and corrected that. We also had to change the format to exFAT from MSDOSfat32 because the ISO file is larger than 4.0 GB.

Thank you so much! It might be a day or two before I can give it a try with the holiday coming up. I will report back our progress.

I believe the Windows 8.1 file name is:

Win8.1_English_x64.iso

I will try to get back to my uncle's tomorrow, but that may have to wait a couple of days to verify that and check the MD5sum (which I had to lookup what that meant). According to what I found I would use the 'Terminal' and type in "md5 Win8.1_English_x64.iso" if that is the actual file name. And that would give me a result like "MD5 (Win8.1_English_x64.iso)= areallylongstringoflettersandnumbers1234567890"

And if that matches what it should be, then we'd know the file was downloaded corruption free. Correct?

Also thanks for the tip about transferring his files from his old Dell PC. I will look at what you suggested.

Thank you again for all your help.

I have returned to my uncle's.

The file we downloaded from Microsoft is named: Win8.1_English_x64.iso

I used the Terminal and entered this:

openssl md5 /Users/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/Desktop/Win8.1_English_x64.iso

And this is the result:

MD5(/Users/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/Desktop/Win8.1_English_x64.iso)= e0d4594e56c0545d379340e0db9519a5

Since that matched the number you provided in the reply above, I went ahead and burned the ISO file to a DVD. The burn was successful and verified. When mounted to the desktop the disk shows a name of: IR5_CCSA_X64FRE_EN_US_DV9. I did not give it this name, this is the name it gave itself.

Going back to Boot Camp Assistant, we had already downloaded the support files to the USB thumb drive, and with the box for Install Windows 7 or Windows 8 checked, we clicked the continue button. We get this message: "Windows 10 is not supported on this Mac. Please use a DVD or USB drive which contains Windows 7 or Windows 8."

We ejected the DVD and tried clicking the continue button on Boot Camp Assistant. It told us: "The installer disk could not be found. Insert your Windows installer disk and wait a few seconds for the disk to be recognized." We inserted the DVD and nothing happens.

I opened the DVD and this is a list of files on the DVD:

autorun.inf

boot - (a folder)

bootmgr

bootmgr.efi

efi - (a folder)

setup.exe

sources - (a folder)

support - (a folder)

This is a list of files on the thumb drive:

$WinPEDriver$ -(a folder)

AutoUnattend.xml

BootCamp - (a folder)

Was I supposed to burn what's on the thumb drive onto the DVD too? What are we still doing wrong?

Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

The problem is not the steps you are executing, but High Sierra's BC Assistant on a 2011 Mac. It is stopping you from using the DVD, because it incorrectly detects it as a W10 DVD. The work-around is to bypass BCA.

1. Create a FAT partition using Disk Utility of the size you want the Windows partition to be.

2. Check the output of sudo fdisk /dev/disk0 to confirm that you have a MBR, which helps you install Windows in BIOS mode. It should look similar (but will differ in specific start/size values) to

sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

Password:

Disk: /dev/disk0 geometry: 31130/255/63 [500118192 sectors]

Signature: 0xAA55

Starting Ending

#: id cyl hd sec - cyl hd sec [ start - size]

------------------------------------------------------------------------

1: EE 0 0 2 - 25 127 14 [ 1 - 409639] <Unknown ID>

2: AC 25 127 15 - 1023 244 14 [ 409640 - 250059096] <Unknown ID>

3: AB 1023 244 15 - 1023 70 15 [ 250468736 - 262144] Darwin Boot

*4: 07 1023 96 42 - 1023 223 5 [ 250732544 - 249384960] HPFS/QNX/AUX

3. If it is dissimilar, post the output.

4. Insert the DVD, and reboot, and hold Alt/Option key. Choose the Windows icon from DVD (not the EFI Boot) and follow prompts. Choose the FAT partition, format it to NTFS, if asked to.

If you see any errors, please post back. A screen shot/photo image is very helpful.
