Random Programs open when opening Macbook Pro

I am running High Sierra 10.13.2 on my 2015 Macbook Pro. Often when I open the machine after sleep, several programs are open. All programs were closed when I put the machine to sleep, yet when I open the machine I often find one or even several programs running. Finder, photos, or who knows what else will be there to greet me when I open the lid. Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this behavior?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS High Sierra (10.13.2), 16 GB Ram

Have you tried going into system preferences>Users and Groups> Login Items?

When you say "All programs were closed"? Did you actually quit the programs or just close their windows?

Safe mode (sometimes called safe boot) is a way to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks and prevents some software from automatically loading or opening.

Run safe mode , repair disk .

I quit the programs by clicking quit on the dock. The ones that appear mysteriously are not the ones I had been using when I put the machine to sleep. For example I may find several finder windows open, photos, safari (which I never use) and others. It is very odd and I believe it started with the last update.

These are definitely not log in items. There is no regularity and the items are completely random. Sometimes one thing, sometimes several and sometimes none at all. It is a mystery—maybe gremlins?

Thank you for your suggestion, tygb! I have run safe mode. It is too soon to say for sure but I will let you know if it helps. Since it happens randomly, it may take a few days to see if it helps.
