how do i get permanently rid of the notification that keeps popping up telling me to update High Sierra? I've looked on system preferences / notifications but the only thing I seem to be able to do is turn on 'do not disturb' - but that only mutes it for a day.
I'd like not to ever receive them as I have no intentions of updating - which option do i need to use?

odd, i've gone into the system library and my user library and can't see that folder at all - can you shed some light?
Yes, this is hugely annoying and more like strong arm tactics on Apple's account.
Download the installer and when it opens quit the installer. The App Store will notice it is on your hard drive and stop bugging you.
You can disable the nag by removing the following, recently added bundle directory :
/Library/Bundles/OSXNotification.bundle
