iPhoneX selfie portrait

I'm trying to take a selfie portrait.

Before I took the picture, I could see that my face is clear and the background is blur. Exactly how I wanted it to be. But after I took the picture, and I look at it, the effect of Portrait is actually not there. The background remains clear and "in focus".

I use the normal button on the front of the screen to take the picture.

Occasionally, I do get the Portrait effect I want; but not always and that is annoying. I do not have warning messages like the background lighting is too bright or telling me to move further away etc.

So what I have done wrong?

iPhone X, iOS 11.2.1

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, SGRunner.
If I understand your post correctly, you're not always getting the Portrait effect you want when you take selfies. I'd like to help.
Make sure you're using these steps to take your selfie:

Take a selfie in Portrait mode

Now with your iPhone X, you can capture selfies in Portrait mode the same way you take a photo of someone else. Just tap first to flip the camera.

Open the Camera app.

Swipe to Portrait mode.

Tap .

Hold your iPhone X in front of your face.

Snap your selfie with one of the volume buttons.

Has Portrait mode been removed accidentially? If so you can add it back to a photo.

Remove the Portrait mode effect

If you take a photo in Portrait mode and then decide that you don't want the blurred effect anymore, you can remove it in a few quick steps.

Select the photo that you want to change.

Tap Edit.

Tap Portrait at the top of your screen.

If you change your mind and want to re-add the Portrait mode effect, go back to Edit and tap Portrait again.
