itunes no longer supports ipod classic

I think my question comes down to, "how can I downgrade to the previous version of iTune?"

Here's the background...

After the bad idea of "upgrading" to High Sierra, and working through an endless list of problems, I just ran into a new one. iTunes will no longer recognize my iPod. It's the Classic 160GB (the best iPod ever).

The iPod shows up in the System Report as a USB device. It also shows up on the desktop as a volume. Clearly the Mac recognizes it as an iPod and a working USB device.

iTunes refuses to show it in the list of devices.

In a chat with Apple support, I was told my iPod is no longer supported.

Looking in the Console, I found message from iTunes such as these. This seems to confirm that iTunes no longer recognizes or supports the iPod classic.

There had been a method to revert an older iTunes mentioned here

Deploy apps in a business environment with iTunes - Apple Support

and an article elsewhere that made reference to the above, here

How to install iTunes 12.6.3 to replace iTunes 12.7 | Macworld

To your other question(s) not sure about to implement an answer.

There may be a need to acquire and use additional hardware; to

also get copy of the macOS installer if you've not saved one.

IF you've not made backups (other than Time Machine) its do-able

but not as easy. ~ A complete 'bootable full system' clone, is ideal.

And on a separate self-powered external drive enclosure which

supports fast data transfer speed. {& If needs be, it will run Mac.}

(Third-party clone utilities can be helpful to create stand-alone clone

copies for use in repair, restore, and offline recreation of a failed Mac.

SuperDuper (shirtpocket software) & CarbonCopy (bombich) are OK.)

You could also be on the lookout for an older Mac configuration where the

owner had upgraded to gain features (or mistakenly did so) and is selling

their old reliable Apple desktop model; & one that has firewire ports, etc.

Not sure if your present situation suggests another problem, in hardware.

In any event...

Good luck & happy trails! 🙂

IF you had a clone of previous system that supported older version iTunes

you may be able to have a secondary startup hard disk drive and use it.

The ability to start in an older supported system is only limited by how its

done. An external enclosure may have insufficient data speed or connection

to properly work or compare in performance to a drive on system bus.

To always keep a working Mac at least one or more systems behind, is good

because you never know when - or if - you may find a nice older product that

may not work with a newer macOS or iOS. {presently using G4 Mac mini 1.5}

Good luck & happy trails! 🙂
