safari cannot connect to server

I’m opening a new thread because existing ones seem a bit old. Same problem as previous posts. I have the internet and can both receive mail from my ISP, and connect wirelessly with this iPad. The problem applies to applies to all browsers, so it can’t be Safari. It also occurs when I log in as a guest, so clearly it doesn’t lie in the user preferences for Safari when I‘ve followed all tips I’ve found:

I have:

turned off all firewalls

changed dns settings to directly get to google

scavenged all safari stuff in both the user and system libraries

The problem may be related to Dropbox. I was uploading a big group of files (probably 2 hours). So I went out for the afternoon. I noticed the Safari problem when I got home. So I have quit Dropbox from the icon in the menu bar. When I tried to delete the Dropbox app, I was unable to do so. The message was that ‘some extensions are still in use’. So I scavenged through my user library and system library and deleted everything I could see, and restarted. I still can’t delete the Dropbox app. It looks like Dropbox has seized ownership of all browser connections.

does one have any clues how to solve the problem?

Did you restart your Mac?

Here are some additional troubleshooting steps to follow, in no particular order:

If you don't get anywhere, you can use the following procedure to determine if the problem is internal or external to your Mac. Causes may involve your router, your ISP, the DNS Server(s) it uses, or certain user-configurable options.

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Load macOS Recovery by holding and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac with a third finger.
  3. At the macOS Utilities screen, release those two fingers.
  4. Choose Get Help Online.
  5. Safari will launch, but it will lack your bookmarks, favorites, history and other preferences.

Determine if the problem persists while using Safari in that mode. After that, restart your Mac normally, and reply with your observations.

Back up your Mac prior to making any changes to its file system. To learn how to use Time Machine please read How to use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support.

You effectively isolated the problem to your Mac. Something broke its ability to connect beyond your local network, a possible consequence of installing "Intego" or something equally odious. Any number of non-Apple "cleaning" and / or "security" products can also be responsible. Those things are very popular and highly successful scams. If you installed anything like that, the only practicable solution is to erase the Mac and reconfigure it from the ground up.

Another thought is to confirm your Mac's system time and date are correct for your geographical location. Secure websites won't load unless they're correct.

If you think it's related to Dropbox it should be simple enough to uninstall it, and determine if the problem continues. As I understand Dropbox your files will still remain available on their servers, and you can always reinstall Dropbox again.

The only remaining suggestion I have is to reinstall macOS: How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support. If that proves unsucessful, then Contact Support. You may have to pay them to help you undo the damage.

With the understanding it's not possible for me to know exactly what you did, reinstalling macOS should fix whatever damage might have occurred as a result.

My Time machine is backing up to my Synology server quite happily too.

Those backups are not and will never be reliable. It's another story altogether. To learn how to use Time Machine please read How to use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support. Non-Apple NAS devices are not supported and will never be reliable.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I don’t have any cleaning programs. I do have intego antivirus, but i’ve disabled it. I’ve checked out your link and done everything suggested. I have also cleaned out history, all caches, cookies. I did that on the initial attempt to resolve the problem.

In any case the problem applies to Chrome and Firefox so it’s unlikely to be Safari.

Read documents and nothing applies to the current problem. Tried safe boot, but problem stll existed. Tried recovery, and able to access internet via SafarI. Yahoo OK, and I was able to log into my iCloud account, which I cannot do when booted normally i.e when I restarted.

It can’t be the modem-router as I am using an iPad now with cellular off, and only using wireless via modem. Nor can it be the ISP, because I get mail on my iMac and can browse in Safari on my iPad. My Enphase solar battery system is continuing to report via wireless to the Enphase server. My Time machine is backing up to my Synology server quite happily too. Likewise my iTunes is happily feeding into my amplifier via Ethernet.
