Lightning Cord Headphones Short Out In Cold Weather / Skiing / Snowboarding

Hi, so I have always skied with my iPhone in my chest pocked with wired apple OEM headphones. Never had an issue with the old analog connection however ever since Apple switched to the lightning connection I have found (on 5+ occasions over 2 years) that the phone no longer recognizes that the cord is plugged in after about 5 seconds of music playing. It then stops the music and pauses it. It typically happens when temperatures are <25 degrees Fahrenheit. There is no moisture contacting the phone and the issue occurs with the new lightning headphones as well as with the adapter. My theory is the cold is causing a slight shrinking of the metal contacts and contact is lost. If I unplug the cord and put it back in it will work for another 5-10 seconds before shorting out again. I am getting some cheap bluetooth headphones to try and fix the issue but I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

I’m having the same issue. Stock lightning headphones from an iPhone X. They stop working about 15 minutes into walking the dogs in cold weather and then exhibit the exact same behavior you describe as I unplug and plug in the headphones.

The tech specs for the phone list 32-95F as the temperature range for “normal operation.“ so I guess this is expected behavior now? ***** when something works perfectly fine for so long and the “new and improved“ model turns out to be a downgrade.

Sorry, but the people that post recommended operating temps are being fanboys. It's just non-sense being recited to defend Apple at any cost after the whole temperature debacle, and the software update is just a hack to keep people happy until a new version of hardware is released.

The phones claimed the same recommended operating temps for years, and they never had these issues because they had a headphone jack. The issue isn't the phone, the issue is the adapter to convert your headphones signal to use the new input. So that's for starters, the real issue.

Basically Apple doesn't care because they want you to buy bluetooth headphones. But any audiophile knows that the compression associated with bluetooth headphones decreases the quality of the audio experience, not to mention the inconveniences of charging wireless headphones. So there really isn't a solution to this issue unless you want to accept looking like frankenstein with a pair of real bluetooth headphones, or use their poor attempt at wireless headphones that fall out of your ears. Yah!

I too have the same issue. I have the iPhone 7+, and when walking in the cold talking to someone, headphones stop working, and as mentioned before, I can replug and they work for 5 seconds and again stop working. This for me is unacceptable from apple. They MUST fix this problem, or go back to the original analog input. It is also a pain in the *** not being able to listen to music while charging your phone at the same time. And in my opinion, going Bluetooth is not a solution. I am really starting to get fed up with Apple.

Are you using the phone in conditions outside of which Apple says it will function correctly? If so, I suspect that Apple will not view this as a priority issue.

There are adapters that will allow you to do that.

So, you got lucky and were able to use the phone in a way that Apple didn't guarantee it would work. Now you can't. I understand it's annoying but Apple isn't in the wrong here. The phone continues to work according to spec.

Infuriating problem. Trying to keep my phone warm doesn't seem to help my issue. Cuts out several minutes into the cold and then seconds afterwards. OEM headphones are complete garbage. My friends with other's manufacturers's phones don't have any of these issues. I only upgraded to an iPhone 8 after we were all duped by apple into making our older phones obsolete. I'll see my contract out and then switch away from apple - they should know better...
