Canon XF import issues in 10.4

We shoot on the Canon C300 and after the recent 10.4 update all of our clips appear as 5 minute chunks during the import process. This greatly slows things down by asking the viewer to display 12 clips for an hour of video when it previously only had one. Clutters up the project as well.

This issue came up in the past and was fixed by updating the Canon XF plugin from the Canon support site, but the latest version they have was released on 12/15/17, a few days before the 10.4 release. It doesn't solve the problem.

Clips are capped at 2.05gb each. As an example, before I would have had clip # AA3754 with a duration of 01:29:15:00. Now I have clips # AA375401-AA375417, with each one being 00:05:16:00.

The workaround for this problem is to merge the clips in Canon XF utility.

Open your media in XF utility and Export To MXF.

Select the way the files will be exported from the pull-down menu (I use merge each clip):

  • Copy Files Copies the original MXF stream files exactly as they are. This is the default setting.
  • Merge All Clips Merges the MXF stream files within each clip and also merges multiple selected clips into a single file.
  • Merge Each Clip Merges the MXF stream files within each clip but keeps multiple selected clips as separate files.

Import the exported file in FCPX.

I have the same problem with files from the XF100, and the workflow is the same as with 10.3.4 only now the files nog in one big file have to manual put them together export and import them.

we shoot wedding video’s and ceremonies are about 1 hour, also on evening we let 1 camera roll about 3 hours, so it is a pain in the .... to put them together. I am ’happy’ that I am not the onlyone with is problem

I wanted to raise this question again as i've seen it come up in other threads but it remains unanswered. We're working with hours of new footage every day, and while I understand we can make compound clips with the pieces, this is retroactively damaging our old projects. Is there any way to get confirmation an update planned soon?

I have a 40 minute show shot on a mix of 305's & 105. Originally edited in FCPX 10.3 now just come to re-import footage from camera archive into the project on FCPX 10.4 and the footage clips aren't recognised because their file names have all changed. What was 1 clip called AA0476 is now split into 5 clips called AA04761, AA04762 etc etc.

Cant think of any other way to get this project up and running without having to reimport the footage again.
